故事的主人公小尼爾斯是個(gè)調(diào)皮搗蛋，好吃懶做，不學(xué)無術(shù)，的小男孩。還經(jīng)常虐待自己家院子里的小動(dòng)物的。可動(dòng)物們也只能啞巴吃黃蓮一有苦說不出。
突然有一天他看到外婆留給她媽媽的禮物箱，上面坐著一個(gè)小精靈還打算捉弄他，還過分的欺騙了他。結(jié)果被變成了一個(gè)小人，還受到了家里動(dòng)物們的欺負(fù)和教訓(xùn)。但這一切都是他咎由自取。后來的隨著大雄鵝開始了一場翻山過海的奇妙旅行。故事就此開始了。
突然有一天，命運(yùn)多舛的尼爾斯又被一群烏鴉給抓住了，結(jié)果一只經(jīng)常被嘲笑的烏鴉鈍鈍奮不顧身的去救下了尼爾斯，于是鈍鈍就被討厭的烏鴉群抓起來了。尼爾斯也不顧一切地救下了鉗鈍。鈍鈍和尼爾斯道謝之后，尼爾斯又繼續(xù)開始了自己的旅程。
不久后尼爾斯他們一個(gè)老鷹巢穴，只見里面躺著一只可愛的小雛鷹，叫做高爾果。大家都很喜歡它。可是糟糕的是這只小雛鷹竟然被可惡的動(dòng)物園抓走了。尼爾斯和大雁群還有大雄鵝一起，想方設(shè)法地進(jìn)入動(dòng)物園。把小雛鷹解救了出來。
長期的旅途，讓他不禁有些想念父母，想念自己的家。他想回家了。正在他猶豫沮喪的時(shí)候，他無意間聽到了兩頭貓頭鷹的對話。得知，只要自己安全的把大雄鵝送回家之后一切就可以恢復(fù)原樣。
不知過了多久，經(jīng)歷了多少冒險(xiǎn)故事，這一天終于到來了。大雁首領(lǐng)阿卡帶著大雁群，尼爾斯，大雄鵝回到了家中。他開心極了?？伤母改竻s不之情地把他的朋友們都抓了起來?？烧?dāng)，尼爾斯打算救他們的時(shí)候突然發(fā)現(xiàn)自己聽不懂動(dòng)物們的語言了。他把自己的經(jīng)歷講給父母聽之后，父母便把大雁們給放了。尼爾斯意識(shí)到自己變成人了。
從此之后，尼爾斯變成了一個(gè)善良 ，勤勞，可愛的小男孩了。
